What is METRIC?
METRIC stands for Measuring, Evaluating and Translating Research Into Care. It is an innovative online practice improvement program that allows you to earn CME credit in your office, while improving patient care. The program is designed to assist family physicians in fulfilling the requirement for Part IV of Maintenance of Certification.

It is an innovative online practice improvement program that allows you to earn CME credit in your office, while improving patient care. The program is designed to assist family physicians in fulfilling the requirement for Part IV of Maintenance of Certification.
How does the METRIC program work?
The METRIC program guides you through a step-by-step process:
- Complete a short questionnaire. You begin by filling out a short practice assessment questionnaire, which gives you a sense of your current systems of practice.
- Review charts and enter patient data. Next, you pull 10 patient records for chart review. A downloadable form lists the chart review questions, which are based on evidence-based performance measures. Once you review the charts, you enter the data online. You can enter all 10 charts at once, or enter some charts and return to the program to enter the rest.
- Assess your performance. Once you’ve entered data for 10 charts, you will see how your data compares with other users’ data. Information about your practice and your clinical chart review is included in the peer comparison.
- Build your action plan. Next, build an action plan that’s based on your feedback report. The program provides descriptions of possible interventions and tools to help build a plan that’s right for your needs.
- Implement your plan. Your action plan becomes a guide to making change in your practice systems over the three-month action period. You will receive a reminder when it is time to return to METRIC and begin the remeasurement phase.
- Remeasure and reassess. Complete a second practice questionnaire and review of a second set of 10 patient charts. A final report compares your baseline and follow-up data and also displays your peers' baseline and follow-up data. You then have a chance to reflect on the impact of your changes. Continued improvement of your practice may lead to better outcomes for your patients.
