JAMA Career Center -- A directory of 70 nonprofit and faith-based organizations providing volunteer opportunities for physicians abroad.

Foundation for Advancement of International Medical Education and Research (FAIMER) -- Search FAIMER’s International Opportunities in Medical Education database of 127 U.S. and Canadian allopathic medical schools, a joint project with the Global Health Education Consortium (GHEC) and Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC).

The University of Washington International Health Group -- Provides a list of non-UW opportunities in international health.

International Healthcare Opportunities Clearing House (IHOC) -- IHOC is designed for health care professionals and students who are interested in volunteer work with underserved communities at home or abroad.

American Medical Student Association -- The International Health Opportunities Directory has been a popular AMSA publication since the first edition was published in 1984. It is now solely online and is updated regularly.

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists -- Provides information about organizations that can be useful for physicians and students looking for international opportunities.

The American Academy of Pediatrics -- Designed to assist pediatricians in finding a placement that suits their needs, the AAP’s Directory of International Service Opportunities can be a useful source for health professionals in other specialties.

Fellowship and Scholarship Opportunities

Directory of Grants and Fellowships in the Global Health Sciences: Predoctoral/Graduate Grants and Fellowships -- A National Institutes of Health directory of funding opportunities available before the postdoctoral level. This includes: bachelor's, master's and Ph.D. scholarships, as well as any grants or fellowships open to students at these levels or to those who have received a bachelor's or master's degree.

University Coalition for Global Health -- Provides a list of links to other Web sites for information on fellowships, scholarships and volunteering abroad.

NIH/Fogarty International Clinical Research Scholars Program -- This program is designed primarily for students with a strong interest in, and a potential for, a career in international health activities and/or clinical research. Fellowship sites vary. In previous years they were in Bangladesh, Botswana, Brazil, China, Haiti, India, Kenya, Mali, Peru, South Africa, Tanzania, Thailand, Uganda and Zambia.

Yale/Johnson & Johnson Physician Scholars in International Health Program -- Provides opportunities for physician-in-training scholars during their residency and career physician scholars for 4- to 8-week rotations overseas. Program sites vary. In previous years they were in Eritrea, Honduras, South Africa, Uganda and Vietnam.

The O.C. Hubert Student Fellowship in International Health -- Endowed by the O.C. Hubert Charitable Trust, this fellowship is designed to encourage students to think of public health in a global context. Established in 1999, the fellowship provides an opportunity for third- and fourth-year medical and veterinary students to gain public health experience in an international setting.

Mabelle Arole Fellowship -- Administered by JSI Research and Training Institute, Inc., this fellowship is designed for pre-med students interested in international health. The Mabelle Arole Fellow will learn about how community-based health programming works and how it contributes to a community's well-being in Jamkhed, India.

Seeds Of Sustenance (SOS) Fellowship Program In Africa -- SOS fellowship and internship programs provide unique opportunities for international development and public health professionals and graduate students to gain valuable international experience through their work assigned to development organizations in sub-Saharan Africa.

The Commonwealth Fund/Harvard University Fellowship in Minority Health Policy -- A one-year, full-time program designed to create physician-leaders who will pursue careers in minority health and health policy.

Brown University Foreign Studies Fellowship Program -- The Foreign Studies Fellowship was established to promote a sensitivity to international health issues, an interest in pursuing scholarly research in international health, and a desire to engage in activities that will benefit developing nations.

The ASPH/CDC Allan Rosenfield Global Health Fellowship Program -- Provides international training opportunities for recent graduates of Association of Schools of Public Health (ASPH) member accredited schools of public health (MPH and doctoral level).

MAP International Medical Fellowship -- The Medical Assistance Programs (MAP) International Medical Fellowship (formerly known as the MAP-Reader's Digest International Fellowship program [MAP-RDIF]) encourages lifelong involvement in global health issues by providing selected medical students firsthand exposure in a Christian context to the health, social and cultural characteristics of a developing world community. Fourth-year medical students, residents and interns are eligible to apply.

USAID Global Health Fellow Program -- USAID Global Health Fellows are recruited for specific positions and work two to four years full-time to gain experience and expertise in global health development. Placements are made both in Washington, DC, and in developing countries.
