John Meigs, M.D., FAAFP
Vice Speaker
John Meigs, M.D., FAAFP, a family physician in Centreville, Ala., is vice speaker of the Congress of Delegates, the governing body of the American Academy of Family Physicians. As vice speaker, Meigs serves as an officer on the AAFP’s board of directors. The AAFP represents more than 94,600 physicians and medical students nationwide.
Meigs has been in private practice in Centreville, his hometown, since 1982. He is one of five physicians serving Bibb County and its population of 22,000. Outside of his private practice, Meigs serves as chief of staff at Bibb Medical Center, a 25-bed rural hospital in Centreville. As an AAFP board member, Meigs will advocate on behalf of family physicians and patients nationwide to inspire positive change in the U.S. health care system.
A member of the AAFP since 1979, Meigs has served on numerous commissions and committees, including the Scientific Assembly Resolutions Committee and the Committee on Rural Health, and chaired the Commission on Health of the Public. He has been a delegate or an alternate delegate to the Congress of Delegates since 1996.
At the state level, Meigs is an active member of the Alabama Academy of Family Physicians, having served on its board of directors since 1991, including terms as president and chairman. He also has served on the Alabama AFP’s Executive Committee and chaired the Public Relations Committee and Education Committee. Meigs served as vice president of the Alabama Academy of Family Physicians Foundation, the charitable arm of the organization, from 2003 to 2008.
Meigs is a former Speaker of the House of Delegates and College of Counselors for the Medical Association of the State of Alabama and currently serves as a member of its Board of Censors as well as a member of the State Board of Medical Examiners and the State Committee on Public Health. He also serves on the Alabama Family Practice Rural Health Board.
Meigs is a clinical associate professor in the Department of Family and Community Medicine at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa and a clinical professor in the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Alabama-Birmingham School of Medicine. In 2003, he was awarded the University of Alabama School of Medicine Argus Award for Best Attending in Family Medicine.
Meigs is an active member of his community as indicated by his service as a deacon at Brent Baptist Church, a member of the Brent Civitan Club and as president of the Bibb County Junior Miss board of directors. In 2004, he was named Bibb County Citizen of the Year by the Kiwanis Club of Centreville.
Meigs earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, and his medical degree from the University of South Alabama in Mobile. He completed his family medicine residency at UAB/Selma Family Practice Residency Program in Selma, Ala., where he also served as chief resident.
He is board certified by the American Board of Family Medicine and has the AAFP Degree of Fellow, an earned degree awarded to family physicians for distinguished service and continuing medical education.
